Task 1 –
Introduction – i am going to be researching 3
different types of online businesses from the private, public and N.G.O sector
in order to bring ideas for the business i am going to create.
JD Sports - A PLC Company that is more known as JD Founded in 1981 by the owners of the company John Wardle and David Makin. It was first opend in 1983 in the Arndale Centre in manchester. It is widley aimed more at the teenagers and young adults area. Now JD has more then 200 stores around the UK. The purpose of the business is to sell its products to earn income.
Aim Of JD Sports - To provide a good customer service to consumers
Objectives -
- Minimize customer complaints / Increase customer service
- Low staff turn over
- Increase customer retention
Issues that a business organisation would need to consider to go online -
Marketing - A marketing stradegy for a business would be certainly needed if it wants to go online. Providing services to its consumers would be a main point for the business to have. with the goals of increasing sales.
Finance -Finance is an issue for every business regardless of the size of the business or the location. the main financial issues for a business would be the equipments/products, store space etc.
Legal - A main legal issue would be that you would have to make sure that your business does not contain the same name as any other business
HR - Some of the HR's issues would be the following: no communication with workers, no good communication with consumers.
Logistics - Economic problems
are one of the main issues
.
Site implementation - The website may not work out as planned
Describe how small businesses prepare to market and sell products or services -
Word of mouth - This is an unpaid form of promotion, in which satisfied customers usually would tell other people how much they like that business, its products and services. Word of mouth can actually be one of the most effective ways in getting the business more known.
Posters/Flyers - Posters are sometimes also effective when opening a small business. If the poster/flyer looks attractive then it would make the consumers want to try find out more about the business and what products it provides.
TV/Radio - Tv and Radio are both very effective ways on getting the business to become professional because majority of people usually watch T.V. So if people may not know nothing about that certain business they surley will by watching its advertisment on T.V. or radio and that will attract the consumers.
Social Media - Social media is also very effective if the business decides to post its products/items up on twitter or facebook which majority of the country actually use.
Hierarchical structure –
In
the hierarchical structured organisation they have different levels, each one
above the other. Each person has someone working directly under them withing
their control.
Flat structure –
Unlike
a hierarchical structured business the flat structure has less levels. Most
structures work well for the different businesses they are. Flat structures are
usually for small businesses. On the other hand the flat structure needs to
ensure that the managers control does not become too uncontrolable that they
wont be able to manage with.
Matrix –
Matrix
is quite unique to both the hierarchical structure and the flat structure. The
matrix structure is a team will be created by a certain project that has been
put up by the manager. frequently they are only set out for the project.
Private
Sector – JD Sports –
JD Sports a private sector business operating across the United
Kingdom. JD Sports has a online website which is a good key on helping make
their business more professional and more visible to the UK shoppers. Having
this online website of theirs has made JD Sports more known to the communities
and therefore has had a whole lot more customers buying their products.
JD Sports - JD sports uses both its online website to sell and its actuall store. its online website becomes very useful for consumers e.g. incase the consumer lives in a certain area where the JD store is not near by but the website gives them the chance to shop online and get their item deliverd to the home address. JD also gives a wife information on its website to help the consumer shop exactly what he/she is looking for e.g. if the consumer wants to buy trainers he/she would search for it, then if he/she wants to look for a certain brand it also is there so he/she will click that specific brand, then further on if it wants a specific size to check if its available the website also provides that so it makes it easy for its customers to help them find what they want.
Rules and
Regulations -
Risks of JD - one of the main risks would be supplying issues. if the consumer has orderd an item online it is the companys job to supply that exact item to the exact place the consumer orderd for it to be deliverd.
HR - One of the main risks of HR would be to not have good or excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure. the main reason to this is that a lot of the times HR will recieve calls from consumers who may be very un-polite and extremley rude so it is the role to tackle that problem and be able to communicate with their consumer in a professional manner
Technical Problems - A technical problem can be a big disaster in JD's online business. e.g. if a consumer has tried to purchase items from the website and the website dosent allow its consumers details to go through then that could cause a lot of problems for the company.
Distance selling regulations -
The distance selling regulations were passed to protect consumers when they shop online or if they enter into other Agreements at a distance from the supplier
Trade -
This is the action of buying and selling goods and services.
Financial
issues and risks – Having the online website gives the customers
a chance to pay for their product online. The customer would get its refund
once the goods are returned to the seller. However having an online website can
sometimes be risky as customers may perform fraud. A main way of preventing
fraud is having a lot of security systems on the website.
Funding - One of the
ways many businesses raise their status is by advertisement. This would invite
more customers for the business. It would usually cost £50,000 or above
depending on the type of business. If the business becomes successful then it’s
easy for the owner to open more stores.
Organisational
Structure – The business would need to function with the
best constitution that is suited to its purpose. This depends upon if the
business either has a hierarchical or flat structure.
Hierarchical
structure – the hierarchical structure usually has many
layers of management. Each one of these
managements has a fine extent of control. The way this would usually work is
instructions would deliver from one level of management to those below them,
then the response would come from the below level to upwards. This system that
is managed from the reporting system of hierarchy to the bottom is known as the
string of order/command. The hierarchical offers plain opportunities for
promotion and this could make things less stressful for both managers and
employees because every worker in this structure would know their role. JD
Sports is of a hierarchical structured organization.
Job roles
– There would be different type of job roles in the business such as
–
·
Manager, , IT Administrator, Tax collector, HR, etc
I.T Administration - The main role for I.T. Administration would be about the technology such as the computer/PC managing the networking
etc.
Manager - The managers involves coordination and interaction with employees
HR - HR are usually responsible for the following
- The process of recruiting suitable applicants for the organisation
- Ensuring that employee relations are positive
- Also ensuring that the work enviornment is safe for all staff
Tax collector - Tax collectors gather money that are owed to the government by businesses or individuals.
Financial Manager -
Financial manager are responsible for the following
- Providing financial information
- Analysing competitors
- Managing budgets
- Supervising staff
Website
design features - Stands out and looks attractive. Its colour
schemes are pretty much similar to the one in the shop. Also it provides a lot
of choices for the consumer e.g. the consumer might want a specific item and
might be looking for a specific size and that exactly what the website
provides.
Distance selling regulations – the distance selling
regulations were passed to protect consumers when they shop online or enter
into other contracts at a distance from the supplier.
Oxfam - Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations working in approximately 90 countries worlwide. It's purpose is to find solutions to poverty and injustice around the world. Oxfam was first founded in 1942 by a group of Quakers, Social activists and Oxford academics. Its location is in Oxford, United Kingdom.
Aim Of Oxfam -
To support children who are in need
Objectives of Oxfam -
- Improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable people with in local communities, through education and treatment.
- Improve the quality of life for those groups of people that are in
the greatest of need, or those people that are disadvantaged and
vulnerable living within the local multicultural and the more diverse
global communities.
Financial
issues and risks –
Supply issues - The organisation may not have enough equipment to supply for the needy.
HR - One of the main risks of HR would be to not have good or excellent
communication skills and the ability to work under pressure. the main
reason to this is that a lot of the times HR will recieve calls from
consumers who may be very un-polite and extremley rude so it is the role
to tackle that problem and be able to communicate with their consumer
in a professional manner.
Technical problems - Someone who may donate a huge amount online to the needy and the website dosent allow the payment to go through may cause a big effect.
Oxfam - Oxfam dosent use its website to sell any products but mostly uses it's website to provide information to its consumers. Communicating with them about the life most people around the world are living and to gets its consumers to help provide for the needy and poor. they also use emergency and develppment work to a lot of the world.
Rules and
Regulations -
· Regional
trade agreements - according to Oxfam - A
regional free trade agreement removes all barriers to trade and foreign
investment, meaning that poor economies are not allowed to use import tariffs
to protect their growing industries or their farmers from floods of cheap
imports.
Reference - http://www.oxfam.org/en/campaigns/trade/riggedrules/rtas
Funding - Oxfam has
a lot of advantages on its funding as it has very attractive advertisements
that make customers check the online site to see what they are all about. The
more the business is becoming successful the more it extends its business.
Organisational
Structure - Oxfam is
more of a flat structured business
Flat
Structure - unlike the hierarchical structure the flat
structure organization would have few levels of management between managerial
and the employees. The basic idea that is held behind having a flat
organization structure is to empower employees by making them a larger part of
the decision process.
Job Roles - Manager,
I.T. Volunteers etc.
I.T. – the I.T.
role will be to design the website making it look eye-catching for the
customers.
Manager - The managers involves coordination and interaction with employees
Volunteers - The volunteers role is to just take part in the activities that the job asks them to do.
Website
Design Features - The website has many search boxes in
order to help anybody who is on the website to search for anything in
particular that they desire to find out about. Its website is colourful and
more appealing.
Public Sector - St Thomas Hospital -
Aim of NHS -
The main aim of the NHS is to promote good health, not simply to treat illness.
Objectives of NHS -
- That it meet the needs of everyone
- That it be free at the point of delivery
- That it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay
St Thomas Hospital - St Thomas Hospital is a large NHS Teaching hospital in Central London, England. It was orginally located in Southwark, but based in Lambeth since 1871. It's purpose is to provide health care freely to help patients with their needs.
St Thomas Hospital NHS - St Thomas Hospital mainly uses its website to give information to everyone and to inform them for what they provide to their patients. it also uses its website to educate everyone else by supplying most information that a patient would actually need to know.
Rules and Regulations –
·
Health and safety – Health and safety is part of a risk management and is a legal requirement on all employees. It involves preventing people from being harmed or becoming ill as a result of work activities by the following - it minimises risks to health, proving a satisfactory working environment.
·

Financial
issues and risks –
Risks of NHS -
Supply issues - this could cause a very big problem because if the organisation has a suffering patient and is in need of a specific medicine that is not available in the place it could put the patients life at risk.
HR - One of the main risks of HR would be to not have good or excellent
communication skills and the ability to work under pressure. the main
reason to this is that a lot of the times HR will recieve calls from
consumers who may be very un-polite and extremley rude so it is the role
to tackle that problem and be able to communicate with their consumer
in a professional manner
Technical problems - a main problem would be that the online website would suddenly stop working and patients may be in need of the website to recieve information for an emergency.
Funding – It’s funded through the general taxation system
Organisational
Structure – St Thomas Hospital is more of a hierarchical structure -
Hierarchical
structure – the hierarchical structure usually has many
layers of management. Each one of these managements has a fine
extent of control. The way this would usually work is instructions would
deliver from one level of management to those below them, then the response
would come from the below level to upwards. This system that is managed from
the reporting system of hierarchy to the bottom is known as the string of
order/command. The hierarchical offers plain opportunities for promotion and
this could make things less stressful for both managers and employees because
every worker in this structure would know their role. JD Sports is of a
hierarchical structured organization.
Job Roles – I.T.
administration, HR etc, finance director, Doctors/Nurses.
I.T. Administration - The main role
for the I.T Administration would be about the technology such as the computer/PC managing the networking
etc.
HR are usually responsible for the following
- The process of recruiting suitable applicants for the organisation
- Ensuring that employee relations are positive
- Also ensuring that the work enviornment is safe for all staff
Doctors/Nurses - There role is to assess patients healthcare and take into account their personal and social circumstances.
Finance director - Their main duty is to ensure that all the financial plans support the broader aims of the business
Website
design features - Plain
website. Has many search boxes in order to help customers or whosoever is on
the website to search for anything in particular that they desire to find out about.
The hospital has majority of the colours that are on the website such as turquoise,
blue, white, etc. also giving their patients a wide broard information about different types of illnesses and how to tackle those illnesses.
Start up costs
– this is the costs that will be incurred before a brand new business is
actually able to function. Start up costs include the following –
. Fees, paying for a building to conduct business, living
costs etc.
Operational costs – this is the cost per unit of a product
or a service. Operating costs do not include the costs that are incurred in
design.
Variable costs
– quantity that increases or even decreases over time.
Fixed costs
– these are the costs that remains always or less unchanged irrespective of the
sales revenue, such as the following
Insurance, rent , salaries and wages.
Unit 12 - Business Online -
Some activities that a business going online can have are the following:
- Business can sell to its consumers online an example of this would be ASDA
- Business selling to other businesses an example of this would be rs-online.com
- Charities an example of this would be Oxfam.com
- Central government departments an example of this would be dwp.gov.uk (Department for work and pensions)
All these type of businesses can achieve their aim and
objectives simply by having a presence ( you would be able to find their
website online).
The
Southwark Council website
provides online services, information and advice for residents, businesses and
visitors. It also provides other services for its residents in regards to
housing, repairs and holds responsibilities towards local businesses.
There are many ways in which local citizens benefit from southwark
council. One of them is that it provides many tasks for the local youth
to get involved with. their aim is to get the youth to not be hanging
around in the streets so they prepare activities for them such as Kelly
Avenue Park.
Reference: ''
Central venture park
'' Offering young people a range of opportunities, the playground is free to use and superivised by trained staff.
We offer a wide range of activities from pool to table tennis, dance
workshops to multi sports, and trips such as; ski-ing, wall climbing,
Thorpe Park and horse riding, plus much more!!! ''.
Also
in my own in experience i have had a few problems in my household with
hot water and the council has been always there in a flash to fix the
problem that is needed to be fixed.
Internet Services -
In order to make good use of the web
many organisationshave to recieve the servises of a speacialist such as
ISP (Internet service providers). An internet service provider is an
organisation that gathers up monthly or yearly fee in exchange to
provide a subscriber with internet access.
An example of an
internet service provider would be 'TalkTalk'. Some companies will
sometimes offer a full range of internet services from designing a
website, registering the domain name (web address).
Advertising and Marketing -
The best thing is that the
internet offers organisations amazing opportunities to market their
services or products online and the internet is worldwide so it can be
beneficial for the business.
Marketing online - The whole general
idea for marketing is to know who its consumers are what they need and
where they are (location). There is no business that starts up straight
away and succeeds without having a 'market' for what it offers.
The
internet will usually allow an organisation to see who its competitors
are, where they are(location) and where possible competition threats may
occur from. On the other hand the internet can allow the business to
identify potential opportunities.
Markets for products
can be analysised into parts that are known as 'segments' ( dividing
something into seperate parts or sections ). An example would be for
clothing would be:
- Different sizes of clothing
- Price of clothing
- Clothing gendre (male, female, junior, infant)
- Age of consumer
Advertising -
Online advertising is a huge
industry today. An example would be McDonalds. McDonalds has used 23
different slogans to advertise in the United States and a few other
slogans for other countries such as the UK.
McDonald's has
roughly 1,200 resturants in the UK and employs over 91,000 people who
work together to deliver the high quality food & service that their
consumers know and trust.
JD Sports -
The method employed by the company ( JD Sports ) is its check-out survey. This is a
simple but highly effective survey that is carried out with customers at
the till. By collecting the customer’s home postcode, gender and age
and matching this data to the products purchased, JD can build up
detailed consumer profiles.
Oxfam - A main and simple way which Oxfam uses to provide its activities online is by social networking such as Facebook, Youtube etc. All Oxfam needs is to ensure they are active on these networks and are putting out good content.
NHS - One of the ways that the NHS produces its activities online is by use of video.
UNIT 12 P4 – Describe the financial issues that can affect
preparation for businesses –
JD sports –
Training.
– may not have had experience in doing that particular job e.g. customer
service, replenishing stock etc.
Stock -
Stock may run out fast, customers may want that specific item but is not
available in the store.
Fraud – the
website may need a security system for protection
Distribution
– what type of transport will be made in order to bring in deliveries to the
store.
Oxfam –
Training.
– may not know how to cope with traveling overbroad to help the needy and how
to help them
Stock – stock
may run out fast
Fraud – The
website may need a security system to prevent fraud being made
Distribution
– What transport will be made to deliver the aid equipment to help people
overbroad.
NHS –

NHS. Therefore training would need to take place but will cost money.
Stock -Stock may have run out and might not be available at a specific time when the patient is in need of it right away.
Fraud - The NHS has a counter fraud
service for policy and operational matters. the fraud can come in many
types wheteher it be a patient of NHS chief executive.

SOURCES + ADVICE WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS –

A main way that having family advice helps is that you can
have someone you can certainly trust. Also usually family members who are
involved with each other in a business are usually more committed to its
success. Also there usually much more motivated in doing what it takes to make
the business survive and grow. Also when a family member also owns his/her own
business is likely to help you a lot in your business because it has a wide
range of ideas on how to keep your business up to track.
LAWYER/SOLICITOR
A solicitor would give you many legal ideas. One of the main
reasons to this is because it will have ties with other professionals and local
businesses. Also a solicitor would usually be able to recommend to you a
suitable mortgage dealer that will help with a simple deal.
C.A.B – citizens
advice bureau –
C.A.B offers a free confidential and independent advice.
There advice helps people to resolve their problems whether it be with debt,
benefits, employment and other issues
COUNCIL
One of the main advantages on having a council when opening
the business is that the council would know a lot about the local area
B.I.S (Business
innovation skills - They would provide you with information of
different types of business in the UK which will give you a better range of
ideas on what to do when opening the business
MENTOR The
main benefits of having a mentor is that they can alert you to any new
opportunities, they can help you develop new skills that would be needed for
your job. Also they help answer tough
questions to their career path.
2B) Some of the competitive advantages the business may face are the following -
- Lower costs - the lower the costs are the more profit the business will earn because it wouldnt have to spend much.
- Location of business - Location of the business has its advantadges, 1 of them is that the area is a high quality area.
- Producing much more proffesional managing skills - The
business will have proffesional managing skills which will lead the
business to success by making the businesses evironment a perfect place
to be.
- Selling properties that are affordable and suitable for individuals
Marketing -
Strengths of the business -
- Passion working in an estate agency. - Having passion
in working in an estate agency is a huge strength as it will make you
always aim to earn the best in your business by working your best.
- Large deposit for the business. - Having a large
deposit is a huge strength in opening a business as you would waste
majority of the revenue on opening the store for your business and
have a small deposit for a different invesment.
- Excellent communication skills - Having excellent
communication skills with customerswould be a huge success in your
business as it would show the business as somewere to go. for workers
it's also a big strength as it would make workers happy and satisfied at
their work place and you wouldnt have to have the risk of loosing
workers.
Weaknesses of the business -
- No experience - no experience in working in estate
agency would be the main weakness in opening the business as you would
have no knowledge of the business so then that would lead to you having
to take a huge deal of training on how to manage with that type of
businesss which would lead to a waste of money on opening the business.
- Having to pay other workers - Having to pay other
workers could also be a weakness of the business depending on how much
income your business recieves and on-top of that having to pay more
workers would mean you would not earn enough as you expected.
Opportunities -
- Customers - Having a high amount of customers is a big
opportunity in succeeding in your business as the more customers you
recieve the more your income increases and the more popular and
successful your business becomes
- Married couples , Old couples , young couples (Looking for a property)
Threats -
- Competitiion - Competition would be an extreme threat
to my new business as it could recieve much more customers and that
would mean my business would not earn as much income as expected to
earn.
- High rent - High rent is another essential problem and
threat to the business because with a high rent, it causes a lower
chance of you earning enough income.
- Failure of the business - If the business had a big
plan on what it wanted to achieve and what its goals were and it didnt
meet that target it would lead to failure of the business which would
could mean the business would not be present for much longer.
Personal Strengths -
- ICT GCSE qualification - Recieved a B qualification in my I.C.T. GCES's
- Productive - once i have my target i work towards to produce that specific target
- Hard working - Im a individual that always stays on
task, whatever tasks i have been set i always set out to achieve them
and never complain about the work i get asked to do.
- Responsible worker - In my past carrears and experience with different retail jobs i have been trusted with anything
Weaknesses -
- Management of time. the late nights i have makes me a extremley tired individual in the early mornings.
- Distraction - Im an individual who gets easily distracted from many things such as internet, friends etc.
- Lack of qualifications - havent received much qualifications apart from GCES's in I.C.T, Science and Geography.
Threats -
- Workers may be more experienced
Opportunities -
- Experience - have had 2 years experience of customer
service and have excellent communication skills to communicate with
workers and consumers.
- Team work - My 1 year at JD Sports taught me how
important team work is and how much of an advantage it is e.g. it gets
tasks finishd better and earlier.
My management structure will be a basic flat structure with 1
manager (owner of business) and workers working under the manager. My
skills would have to be that i have excellent communication skills to
help customers with their satisfactory needs, A hard worker always
focusing on his work etc
Training would take place while the
business is running to give the workers a rough idea about what the
business aims and objectives are. The organisation will always sell
afordable properties to its customers.
Extension Task 2 )
Benefits to the customer for a business going online -
Different methods of payments credit/debit -
Some
companies will give you price protection which is usefull if you spot a
product you have just bought now available at a sale price. also another
benefit is that its a quick process, instead of having to go all the
way to the shop then waiting to pay using credit/debit card can be very
simple jus by confirming the bank card detail then the transcation is
complete. another benefit is that the customer can also access their
money anywhere in the globe.
Task 3B) Match skills and abilities to 2 job opportunities
In
my past career in JD Sports i was a successful team worker as many
difficult individual tasks i was set out to do i would gather some other
workers for us to make the task easier by working together and it
worked and we got the job done faster and much better than i would have
myself.
As the manager i will identify some of the personal skills me and my workers posses -
Manager's skills -
- I posses professional leadership skills
